Homesteading Reconsidered

By Samuel P. Wheeler | March 19, 2007

Thank you to btarrington on the Discussion Board for letting us know about an upcoming conference:

The University of Nebraska will host an interdisciplinary conference titled, “Homesteading Reconsidered” on May 17 – 19, 2007.

“President Lincoln signed the Homestead Act into law on May 20, 1862. When it was finally repealed in 1986, over 270 million acres of land had been distributed in 30 different states. This conference will reassess the impacts of homesteading in the U.S. as well as in Canada under the Dominion Lands Act of 1872. Ramifications for industrialization, agriculture, native peoples, prairie ecosystems, and more will be examined.

Keynote speakers will be Dr. Frances Kaye, University of Nebraska-Lincoln; Gerard A. Baker, National Park Service Superintendent of Mount Rushmore National Memorial and enrolled member of the Mandan-Hidatsa Tribe; and Dr. John Mack Faragher, Yale University. Over 35 submitted papers on numerous subjects/themes will be presented as well.”

Advance registration is required. Check out their website at: http://www.unl.edu/plains
