About Me

Samuel P. Wheeler

Samuel P. Wheeler received the Doctorate of Philosophy in Historical Studies from Southern Illinois University in 2008.  His research, writing, and speaking interests include the life of Abraham Lincoln and the American Civil War Era.  He is currently revising his dissertation, ”Every Spot a Grave: The Poetry of Abraham Lincoln,” into a book manuscript. 

In addition to being the creator and editor of LincolnStudies.com, he is currently a lecturer in the history department at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, where he has taught courses such as The Origins of America, 1492-1877, Modern America, 1877-the Present, Illinois History, the Civil War Era, and Historical Research and Writing. 

In 2005, he was named the SIU history department’s “Outstanding Teaching Assistant of the Year,” while his essay, ”Pieces Upon a Chessboard: Abraham Lincoln and the New Almaden Mine Affair” was awarded the 2006 Stanley Zucker Paper Prize.

He has earned degrees from Lincoln-Land Community College, Illinois State University, and the University of Illinois at Springfield. He has worked in various public history institutions, including the Old State Capitol and the Lincoln-Herndon Law Offices, as well as two documentary editing projects, the Lincoln Legal Papers and the Papers of Abraham Lincoln.
